Visiting the California Lighthouse in Aruba

The California Lighthouse gets its evocative name from the SS California, a passenger ship that sank off the northwest coast of Aruba in 1891. The vessel ran aground on the rocky reef just offshore, and the wreck prompted the Dutch colonial authorities to commission a lighthouse to warn future ships away from the treacherous shallows at the island's northern tip. Construction was completed in 1916, and the lighthouse has been guiding mariners safely ever since.

The lighthouse stands 30 metres tall and is built from local Aruba limestone. For decades it was operated by a resident lighthouse keeper who lived in the adjacent cottages. Today those cottages have been converted into the upmarket Lighthouse Restaurant and Bar, making the California Lighthouse one of the only lighthouses in the world where you can watch the sun go down over the Caribbean while enjoying a gourmet dinner.

The lighthouse itself was renovated and reopened for tours in recent years. Visitors can climb the internal spiral staircase to the observation gallery at the top, where a 360-degree panoramic view takes in the entire northwest coast, the resort corridor of Palm Beach stretching south, the wild sand dunes of the Tierra del Sol area to the east, and on a clear day, the Venezuelan coast on the southern horizon. The climb is 52 steps, manageable for most visitors.

The California Lighthouse is universally acknowledged as one of Aruba's prime sunset-watching spots, and for good reason. Facing due west across open ocean, with the lighthouse silhouetted against the burning sky, this is the kind of scene that ends up on every Aruba travel blog and Instagram feed. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the official sunset time to secure a spot on the elevated rocky promontory surrounding the lighthouse base.

Aruba's sunsets are famously dramatic throughout the year. The island sits outside the hurricane belt and enjoys over 300 sunny days annually, which means clear horizon sunsets are the norm rather than the exception. In the dry season (January to March), the air is particularly clear and the colours tend to be vivid oranges and pinks. In the shoulder months, scattered clouds on the horizon can actually create even more spectacular colour displays as the light refracts through them.

For photographers, the golden hour here is genuinely exceptional. The lighthouse itself makes a powerful compositional element. Try shooting from the base looking up to include the lighthouse tower in your frame, or head to the rocky shoreline below for a lower angle with ocean spray in the foreground. Bring a wide-angle lens if you have one.

The California Lighthouse is one of the easiest major attractions on Aruba to reach by rental car, and the good news is that any vehicle in our fleet will handle the route comfortably. There are no dirt roads or off-road sections involved. The entire drive is on well-paved roads.

From the Palm Beach hotel strip, simply head north on L.G. Smith Boulevard, passing the hotels and continuing past the Tierra del Sol golf course turnoff. Follow the coastal road as it curves west and then northwest. You'll see the white lighthouse tower appearing on the hillside ahead. The total drive time from the centre of Palm Beach is approximately 10 minutes.

From Oranjestad, allow around 20–25 minutes. Take L.G. Smith Boulevard north through Palm Beach and continue as above. There is a free car park adjacent to the lighthouse complex with space for around 30 vehicles. On busy evenings (particularly weekends in high season), this can fill up. If so, there is overflow parking further down the hill where the road widens.

The Lighthouse Restaurant and Bar, set in the converted keeper's cottages directly at the base of the lighthouse, is a popular upscale dining option that capitalises magnificently on the setting. The menu focuses on seafood and international cuisine, with tables on a terrace overlooking the ocean. Reservations are strongly recommended for sunset dinners. This is one of Aruba's most in-demand tables.

For more casual dining, the nearby Screaming Eagle (a lounge-style beach bar) and several options along the Palm Beach strip are a short drive away. If you're combining a lighthouse sunset visit with a beach day at Arashi or Boca Catalina, there are food trucks and small snack vendors that typically set up along the coastal road on weekends.
