About Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA)

Aruba's only commercial airport, Queen Beatrix International (IATA code: AUA), is located approximately 2.5 km south of Oranjestad, the island's capital, and roughly 12 km south of the main Palm Beach hotel strip. It is a modern, well-operated facility that handles direct flights from the United States (over 20 departure cities, including New York, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, and Houston), Canada, the Netherlands, Colombia, and various Caribbean hubs.

The arrivals hall is compact and efficient. After clearing immigration (typically 15–30 minutes for US pre-cleared flights, up to 60 minutes for other international arrivals), you emerge into the ground transportation area where taxis, hotel shuttles, and rental car counters are all within a 2-minute walk.

One important logistical note: Aruba operates one of the few US Pre-Clearance facilities in the Caribbean. If you are arriving from the United States, you clear US Customs and Border Protection in Aruba before departure, meaning you land in the US as a domestic arrival, with no immigration line on your return. This is a significant time-saver and one of Aruba's underrated practical advantages for American visitors.

Option 1: Taxi from Aruba Airport

Taxis in Aruba operate on a government-regulated fixed-rate system, there is no meter, and the fares are set by zone. This is actually a good thing: you always know what a journey will cost before you get in, and there is no risk of being overcharged. Official taxis are always white and clearly marked; they queue in the dedicated taxi lane directly outside the arrivals exit.

Typical airport taxi fares (per vehicle, not per person):

• Airport to Oranjestad: $12–$15
• Airport to Manchebo / Druif Beach: $15–$18
• Airport to Eagle Beach: $18–$20
• Airport to Palm Beach: $22–$25
• Airport to Noord: $20–$23

Journey times range from 6 minutes to Oranjestad to approximately 18–22 minutes to the northern end of Palm Beach. A standard taxi holds 4 passengers with luggage; larger vehicles (for groups of 5–8) are also available at a surcharge. Taxis do not accept credit cards. Bring US dollars or Aruban Florins (AWG). The fixed rate applies 24 hours, so there is no night surcharge.

The taxi option is excellent for the first-night transfer if you want the simplest possible arrival experience and you are staying at a Palm Beach resort for the duration. Option 2: Hotel Shuttle

Many of Aruba's larger resorts, particularly the all-inclusive properties at Palm Beach, offer complimentary or discounted airport shuttle service for guests. Check your hotel's website or booking confirmation before arrival. If a shuttle is available, it will typically be waiting in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your hotel's name.

Hotel shuttles are free or very low cost, but they are not flexible. They depart on the hotel's schedule, not yours, and they may stop at multiple hotels before reaching yours. If you arrive tired with young children after a long flight, a 45-minute shuttle that visits three properties before dropping you off is less appealing than it initially sounds.

Some smaller boutique hotels do not offer a shuttle at all. Always confirm in advance.

Option 3: Arubus (Public Bus)

Aruba has a public bus service (Arubus) that connects the airport to Oranjestad and Palm Beach. The fare is AWG 2.50 (approximately $1.40 USD), the cheapest transfer option by a significant margin. However, buses do not run at night, do not accommodate large amounts of luggage, and are not practical for families or anyone arriving on an evening flight. Journey time to Palm Beach is approximately 35–40 minutes including stops.

For budget-conscious solo travellers or couples arriving mid-afternoon, the bus is a perfectly viable option. For everyone else, it is not the most practical choice.

Option 4: Rental Car, Collect at the Airport
