One of the first questions travellers ask when booking a rental car is: "Is it automatic?" At Hermanos Car Rental, the answer is always yes, without exception. Our entire fleet of vehicles, from the compact Kia Picanto to the 8-seat Ford Tourneo, is fitted with automatic transmission as standard. We made this decision deliberately, because we know that a holiday is no time to be wrestling with a gear stick on unfamiliar roads.

Why Automatic Transmission Matters on Holiday

The case for automatic transmission on a rental car goes beyond simple convenience. When you arrive on a new island after a long flight, your brain is already processing new road signs, unfamiliar road markings, local driving habits, GPS directions, and the general excitement (or stress) of being somewhere new. Adding manual gear changes to that cognitive load is unnecessary and, on occasion, genuinely dangerous. The mental bandwidth you would have spent changing gears is much better spent on road awareness.

This is particularly relevant in Aruba, where the road network includes a mixture of modern highways, narrow village streets, roundabouts, and unpaved off-road tracks. Driving through the tight, colour-washed streets of San Nicolas, navigating the roundabouts on J.E. Irausquin Boulevard, or crawling over a rocky trail in Arikok National Park, all of these are easier, safer, and more enjoyable in an automatic.

Automatic transmission also makes it significantly easier for co-drivers and less experienced drivers to take the wheel for part of a day trip. On a two-week holiday with a partner, being able to share driving without worrying about who is comfortable with manual makes a real practical difference to how much ground you can cover.

Automatic Cars and Tourist Safety

Several independent road safety studies have found that unfamiliarity with manual transmission in an already unfamiliar driving environment is a contributing factor in tourist traffic incidents in rental cars. The simplest way to reduce this risk is to eliminate manual transmission entirely, which is exactly what Hermanos has done.

Aruba drives on the right-hand side of the road (like the US and most of continental Europe), which means UK and Australian visitors are already adapting to driving on the opposite side. In this context, having an automatic transmission removes one additional unfamiliar element from the equation and allows you to focus entirely on the road.

Aruba's speed limits are posted in kilometres per hour (km/h). The main highway limit is 100 km/h; urban areas are 40–60 km/h. Traffic is generally light outside of rush hour in Oranjestad (approximately 7:30–8:30am and 4:30–5:30pm), and driving culture on the island is relaxed and courteous.
