Hidden in a ring of volcanic rock on the rugged north-east coast, the Natural Pool, known locally as Conchi, is a sheltered tidal pool where you can swim while the Atlantic crashes over the surrounding rocks. There is no paved road in. The track through Arikok is rocky, steep and often washed into ruts, and only a proper 4x4 with real ground clearance should attempt it. The reward is one of the most dramatic swimming spots in the Caribbean.

Covering nearly 20 percent of the island, Arikok is Aruba's wild heart: cactus-covered hills, the Fontein and Quadirikiri caves with pre-Columbian rock art, the Conchi pool, and old kunuku farmland. Inner tracks are unpaved, rocky and hard on low cars. A Jeep or 4x4 lets you reach the caves, the coast and the viewpoints comfortably rather than turning back at the first bad stretch.

The windward coast is the opposite of the calm resort beaches: crashing surf, jagged limestone, blowholes, and long stretches with no other visitors. The dirt roads linking Andicuri, Boca Grandi and the old gold-mill ruins at Bushiribana are corrugated and dusty. It is raw, cinematic Aruba, and a 4x4 turns a bone-shaking ordeal into a genuinely fun drive.

Boca Prins is a pocket of golden sand dunes and a small wild beach on the east coast inside Arikok. The approach is over sand and rock, and the beach itself has powerful surf that is for playing on the sand rather than swimming. The white dunes against the dark cliffs and blue Atlantic are a photographer's dream, best reached with a capable 4x4.

Yes. The Natural Pool track and most inner Arikok roads are unpaved, rocky and steep, with sections that regularly wash into deep ruts. A normal car will bottom out, risk damage, and in many cases simply cannot make it. A Jeep Wrangler at $280 per day or a 4x4 from $117 per day has the ground clearance and traction to reach these places safely. It is not an upsell, it is what the terrain demands.

Expect rock, loose gravel, corrugated dirt, soft sand near the coast, and steep short climbs, all under strong sun with no shade. Nothing is technical rock-crawling, but it is rough enough that low cars struggle and get damaged. In a proper 4x4 the same trails are genuinely enjoyable. Drive slowly, keep steady momentum on sand, and give way to oncoming vehicles on narrow sections.

Insurance is included on every rental, and our Jeeps and 4x4s are built for the island's tracks. That said, cover applies to normal use on established roads and recognised trails like those in Arikok, not to reckless driving, driving on beaches, or ignoring park closures. Yes. You can self-drive Arikok with a valid park pass, bought online or at the visitor centre. A 4x4 is strongly recommended, and some tracks such as the Natural Pool road require one. Fuel up before you enter, carry plenty of water, and allow at least half a day. There are no shops or petrol stations inside the park.

Start early. Mornings are cooler, the light is better for photos, and you beat both the heat and the crowds at popular spots like the Natural Pool. Aruba is dry and sunny year-round, so trails are usually passable, but after rare heavy rain some tracks wash out temporarily. Always check current conditions and any park closures before you set off.

Plenty of water, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sturdy shoes you can walk over sharp rock in, and snacks, since the wild coast and Arikok have no facilities. Bring a swimsuit and towel for the Natural Pool, a fully charged phone, and a printed or offline map as signal is patchy. Fuel up before you leave the main roads.
